You must read your generator owner’s manual and warranty information regarding who is responsible for what regarding routine and scheduled maintenance. Often, scheduled maintenance that is required and not performed can void your warranty and shorten the life of your generator set.
Preventive maintenance consists of cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, adjusting, and servicing your generator. Before starting your generator, you should, at minimum, inspect the generator set for fuel or oil leaks, inspect the exhaust system for proper mounting and leaks, and check the oil level. Also, ensure the CO detector(s) are operating properly, and all appliances are turned off.
Routine maintenance based on hours of operation: Monitor the generator hour meter and have the required maintenance performed at specified intervals, per your owner’s manual.
Exercise Your Generator: On a bi-weekly basis, start your engine and let it run for 1 hour with a 50% load. This will keep your engine seals lubricated and helps prevent moisture buildup.
Storing Your Gas Generator: fill the fuel tank and put a stabilizer like Sta-bil. You still have to start the generator every two weeks, but the stabilizer will help with keeping the fuel from jelling in the carburetor. Changing your oil and filter before storage can save your bearings from corrosion.
